Title of Performance: ORIGINS of Hip Hop: A Journey through the Cultural History of American Streetdance
Country: United States
“ORIGINS of Hip Hop: An Educational Journey through the Cultural History of American Streetdance” is a one-hour educational, interactive show on the history of Streetdance in America. It begins by paying homage to the roots American Streetdance has in African and Latin social dance, as well as the Jazz era, in a high-energy, multimedia presentation. It then moves through the dances of the Funk era, paying tribute to the impact of Soul Train. Next, students are presented with a timeline of Hip Hop social dance, from the 1980s to now. Last, students enjoy a freestyle piece where the dancers exhibit their favorite forms in a circle, also known as a cipher. Throughout the show, students are introduced to select members of the company as they tell their personal success stories and demonstrate the various histories and techniques behind the dance forms presented on stage. At the closing of the show, students are even invited to get out of their seats and learn some moves with the company!
